Accommodations on Mt.Kilimanjaro
Where to Sleep on Mt. Kilimanjaro
Finding the perfect place to rest during your Kilimanjaro climb is crucial, and comfort is key to making your adventure unforgettable. Your sleeping arrangements will vary depending on the route you choose and the Kilimanjaro Climbing Package you select, but you can expect to stay in either mountain huts or well-equipped campsites. There’s no need to worry about carrying your gear from camp to camp, as our experienced Kilimanjaro Porters will carry all your camping equipment and set up your tent at each location. For optimal comfort, we use Mountain Hardwear Trango 3 tents, designed to keep you warm, dry, and comfortable throughout your climb. These tents are built for three people, but we limit the occupancy to just two, ensuring you have plenty of space for yourself and your gear, so you can relax and recharge for the next day’s journey.

Mount Kilimanjaro Accommodation Styles
Where you sleep on Mount Kilimanjaro depends on the route you take and the accommodation type associated with it. Climbers typically stay in either mountain huts or camping tents, both offering unique experiences amidst the spectacular landscapes of Africa’s highest mountain. Here’s an overview:
Huts : Exclusively on the Marangu Route
The Marangu Route is the only trail on Kilimanjaro that provides mountain hut accommodations. These huts are simple yet comfortable, with bunk beds, mattresses, and communal dining areas. They are an excellent choice for climbers seeking shelter from the elements without the need for camping equipment.
- Mandara Hut (2,700m): Located on the first day of the climb, surrounded by lush rainforest.
- Horombo Hut (3,720m): A midway stop with scenic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
- Kibo Hut (4,703m): The base camp for summit attempts, set in a stark, alpine desert.
Camping : Offered on All Other Routes
The other routes—such as Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Umbwe—require camping. Climbers sleep in high-quality, weather-resistant tents, which are set up and carried by porters. Campsites are strategically located along each route, offering incredible views and a sense of adventure.
- Machame Route (Shira Camp, Barranco Camp, Barafu Camp): Known for its diverse terrain, you’ll camp at different altitudes with dramatic scenery.
- Lemosho Route (Shira Plateau, Moir Hut, Karanga Camp): Offers remote, less crowded campsites.
- Rongai Route (Second Cave, Mawenzi Tarn): Campsites near unique landscapes like alpine meadows.
- Northern Circuit (Pofu Camp, Third Cave): Includes tranquil, off-the-beaten-path camps.
Essentials for Sleeping on Kilimanjaro
- Sleeping Bags: A 4-season sleeping bag is essential to keep you warm, especially at higher altitudes.
- Sleeping Mats: Most tour operators provide insulated mats, but you can bring your own for added comfort.
- Pillows: Inflatable travel pillows can make a big difference during the trek.
Tips for a Comfortable Night
- Stay hydrated and eat well to maintain your energy levels.
- Layer up before sleeping, as temperatures can drop drastically at night.
- Use earplugs if you’re a light sleeper to block out wind or tent noises.
Whether you opt for huts or camping, each night brings a unique experience of Kilimanjaro’s breathtaking wilderness, from starlit skies to sunrise views that fuel your journey to the summit.
