Serengeti Migration safari
The Great Wildebeest Migration
The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti is the world’s largest movement of wild animals, rightfully recognized as one of the eight Natural Wonders of the World. It serves as a spectacular highlight for a dream nature tour of northern Tanzania with Shimboni Africa. Around 1.5 million wildebeests, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras, elands, gazelles, and a following of predators, begin their journey from the calving grounds in southern Serengeti in March and April, heading toward fresh water sources.
Their path takes them through the south-central Seronera area into the Western Corridor and across the Grumeti River from April to May, where they stay until June. The migration then leads them toward Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, crossing the dangerous Mara River around July or August. In October and November, they return through the same perilous river, heading towards Lobo and Loliondo in the eastern Serengeti. By December, they reach the southern Ndutu calving grounds, where they will remain until March.

Why do wildebeest migrate?
The wildebeest migration is a remarkable and critical survival strategy motivated by a desire for water and new grazing areas. This annual migration, which takes place mostly in the Serengeti habitat, is influenced by seasonal rainfall patterns that affect grass growth. As the dry season continues and available grass dwindles, wildebeests migrate to places where recent rains have created lush vegetation, assuring a steady supply of food and water.
For the wildebeests to survive, their yearly migration is crucial because it guarantees them access to vital supplies. Their movement coincides with the various phases of their calving and reproductive cycles, giving them the nutrition they need during these crucial times. In addition, this migration pattern facilitates the recovery and regeneration of the ecosystems they pass through, preserving environmental balance by preventing overgrazing and overcrowding in any one area.
Best Time For Serengeti Migration Safari In Tanzania
You may watch the Great Migration all year; depending of the month, the herds are in different parts of the huge ecosystem. The greatest time to watch the wildebeest migration in northern Tanzania is between June and October. This era overlaps with the dry season. During this period, wildlife congregates near water sources, and the thin foliage provides ideal conditions for animal observation. The wildebeest migration flows clockwise from south to north, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to witness it throughout the park. The exact timing of the legendary river crossings is unknown, but the highest odds are during the dry season.
Dry Season
June until August Best time to see the migration in the Serengeti
June to October is Tanzania’s dry season. During this season daytime temperatures range from 25°C (77°F) to 28°C (82°F) in the Serengeti National Park. Humidity levels are low, and the chance of rain is minimal. Evenings and early morning temperatures can be cold, especially if you are at a higher altitude like the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. Warm clothes are essential for early morning drives and for stargazing at night. It is the most popular time for a Tanzania migration safari.
March until May Best time to see the wildebeest rut
Tanzania experiences a prolonged rainy season with heavy daily rainfall, particularly in April and May. Despite the rain, the daytime temperature remains warm. This season presents excellent photography opportunities with stunning thunderstorms, towering cloud formations, and lush green landscapes. Fewer visitors are in the Serengeti National Park during this season, making it a preferred time for some visitors to plan their visit.
